Today's Basset Hound was created by the monks at St. Hubert's Monastery in France in the 1600s. Long-legged lean hounds were being bred for hunters on horseback; Basset Hounds are the dog of the hunter on foot. The hunter can keep up with the dog, who will follow the scent of the prey with unerring accuracy. Bassets have one of the keenest noses in the dog world -- second only to bloodhounds.
