This breed has a thick, snow-white coat, erect ears, plumed tail, as well as the square build and wedge shaped head that mark the American Eskimo dog as a member of the Spitz family. The AKC first recognized these dogs in 1996. The American Eskimo is divided into 3 size groups: toy, miniature and standard. At any size they are energetic, alert and loyal dogs that make good watchdogs. They can be aggressive towards strangers. Training should be firm and consistent. These dogs need to be groomed at least 3 times a week. Toys are 6-10 lbs. and 9-12" tall. Miniatures are 10-20 lbs. and 12-15" tall. Standards are 18-35 lbs. and over 15" to 19" tall.
