The Terrier Group

This group of dogs has the broadest range of sizes. In fact, the diminutive West Highland White Terrier can stand under a Kerry Blue or a Lakeland Terrier with room to spare. Most of these dogs were bred to hunt and kill other small animals viewed as vermin: rats, rabbits, mice, voles and the like. On city wharfs and in country barns, terriers were the dogs people relied upon to rid their property of pests.

Breeding dogs both hardy enough for that role and spunky enough to relish it is what produced the vivacious and outgoing personality that is the common denominator of this group.

Because they were bred to kill vermin, they don't get along with small animals which makes them unsuitable dogs in a home that also has pet gerbils or hamsters. And in general, they dislike other dogs as well. They are always alert and eager, not content to lie by the fireside for more than a refreshing moment or two to rest before their next adventure. This makes for a group of dogs that can be a challenge to train, but the rewards are tremendous.
