The Sporting Group
Many of these dogs have accompanied humans for centuries on hunts, and they still do exactly that today. But just as many now participate only in competitive events and never retrieve a duck or a grouse. Whether bringing you a pheasant or a Frisbee in its mouth, members of the sporting group are active dogs with even temperaments.
Spaniels, retrievers, setters and pointers are the components of the Sporting Group and in the modern era, many of these breeds have become popular pets in families that do not hunt, but do provide plenty of exercise. After centuries of breeding for periods of high activity, these dogs need regular opportunities to use that trait if they are to be happy and well adjusted members of the family.
Many of these dogs were bred for work in harsh settings: woods or marshes, lakes or tors. As a result, a number of them have waterproof coats and webbed feet, while others have smooth fur that repels brambles and burrs. All members of the Sporting group respond quickly to training and enjoy being part of the family.
