The AKC's Miscellaneous Class

This is a Class, not a Group, and there are some important differences. Miscellaneous status for a particular breed means that there is ongoing development or enhanced preservation and revival efforts that are broadly based and active. Members of this group are also part of the AKC's Foundation Stock Service; that status will hold true until the breed is accepted for regular status by a vote of theorganization's Board of Directors.

Both new and old breeds of dogs are in development across the world at any given time. The AKC's process for recognizing a breed begins when there is enough activity to admit the incipient breed to the Miscellaneous Class. Requirements include superior breeding practices by a group of people guided by a parent club dedicated to the breed's advancement. Overall, interest in the breed must reach a sustainable level. One of the indicators of that is whether breeding is occurring regionally, nationally or internationally, rather than limited to a single city or two.

Once in the Miscellaneous Class, a breed is deemed eligible to compete and earn titles in Companion Events as well as in specific Performance Events. Although they are not eligible for championship points, members of the Miscellaneous Class may compete in conformation shows.

With the continuation of strong growth via best breeding practices from that point forward, the breed will be admitted to the Stud Book, meaning that birth records will be entered in the organization's permanent registry. With that comes the opportunity to enter all other competitions.

Ultimately, breeds become recognized after evolving to a level of activity that ensures continuity for generations to come.
