An Owner's Miniature Schnauzer Description
See Chip run. See Chip jump. See Chip knock me down! Sounds like a kid's primer, but really, that's what happens. My Miniature Schnauzer is a tiny tornado on four legs. He gets so excited when he sees family members that he just can't control himself! It doesn't matter if we just ducked out with the trash for four minutes or if he hasn't seen us for a couple of days: Chip just goes nuts with the excitement of greeting us. My husband jokes that he's got short-term memory problems, but I think it's terrific that he loves to greet us as though we've been apart forever. I've never had a dog so devoted to the entire family. Friends who've raised Schnauzers for years tell me that's one of the traits of the breed.

And we're sure Chip will always be a puppy at heart. He's nearly seven now, and shows no signs of slowing down or settling into a more sedate adulthood. His energy is endless and he starts a fresh quest for adventure with each new day. His eagerness for our daily walks hasn't lessened. For him, our trek means an hour of new scents and sights to explore, even though it's the same path we always take. When we head to the mountains for camping trips, he's like a kid turned loose at Disneyland. He'll follow his nose to somewhere (or something) and then run back as though to tell us what he found. Then he's racing off again... and tearing back to chat about it, and so on and so on. What a character he is!

A couple of summers ago, we took him on a day camping trip to a nearby state park. Chip found something buried by a tree that excited him so much that he would not stop digging. He'd run back to our spot and then off again to the tree. He finally convinced us to follow him and help him dig. After about ten minutes of digging along with him, we uncovered his treasure; a bag full of garbage that someone had buried. Unearthed, it stunk to high heaven; needless to say , we disposed of it straight away in one of the park's animal-proof trash cans. Chip watched with interest, and really seemed to like the sense of closure, which was hysterical. He shook himself off, gave us one happy dog bark, and headed off to find his next adventure.
